With Putrid Mastication we have again a very fresh and unspent Brutal Death Metal band from the Netherlands. Based in the last year, they are already one year later able to show their first release called “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger”. Indeed at the first sight this one looks pretty lean, as you can only find 4 tracks here, but the past is teaching us, that sometimes appearances are deceitful and less is more. Also in this case? The title track of this mcd “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger” makes the beginning. This one is opening the butchery with a short slamming part that is immediately changing into a more grinding part; accompanied by extreme guttural frog vocals. Towards the end the tempo is changing again into a more slamming range. After scarce 2 minutes we already arrived at track number two. This one is with four minutes the longest track on “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger”, but that does not already mean that one is getting four completely minutes of Brutal Death here, as the beginning and the end consist of samples. Track number three called “Campground Massacre” is tightening the speed compared to the previous track and is presenting itself as a blasting bastard with a short sluggish central part. To the conclusion one gets another fast mid-tempo slam track prefixed with “Fetus Skewer On The BBQ”, which is sounding quite nicely, but has not to offer any bigger surprises like the other three tracks before it. Well and then after 11 minutes and 26 seconds the end of “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger” is reached. The pretty clearly hearable programmed drum sound is for sure the big fatality for this MCD. One can notice at every time that there is no real drummer doing his work here, as the blasting parts are sound too much identically and aseptic and are not able to generate enough compression. The only exception is the mid-tempo part in “Campground Massacre”. Here the drum sound becomes effective pretty good through cool double bass attacks and some quite nice riffs. But unfortunately this is remaining the isolated case. For the future they should let their live drummer Herr Kleis also do his job beyond the stage. Talking about the sound of the guitar and the guttural vocals one isn’t able to blame these 2 guys from the Netherlands, because both is coming across pretty solid. Too bad, that there is no bass to be found here. Indeed there are no riffs played that will set new yardsticks in the Brutal Death Metal genre, but they fulfill anyhow their aim and are able to hold in good mood over the short runtime. The chant is as already mentioned above mostly consisting of sick frog vocals, that are sometimes so extreme, that the impression is aroused, that brother harmonizer had a secret guest appearance. But I can’t say exactly if this is really the case. The production of “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger” has fallen out very good at all however the guitar is pushed into the background a little bit at some parts by the drum sound and the vocals. A advantage of this MCD is the layout. Admittedly one has to resign on an inlay cover and a booklet, but anyhow they have given effort to have the rest turn out sick but still with some certain style. I really like the cover done by Fleshlovers Design in alliance with the band logo and the writing of the MCD. Fleshlovers already have been authorized for the cover of the actual My First Knife full length. On the inside one can find the usual short band info, the thanks text and the address of band and label and the back cover present us then a woman bathing in blood. This MCD has been released as a professional CD-R version by the not very known label Poetry Of The Dead for just 4 €. All in all one can for sure have fun with “Butchered Baby Backyard Digger” if one can see away above some easily kept riffs and a not completely successful drum sound coming out of the electrical outlet. No must have, but still good enough as little dose of Brutal Death now and then.
