Holy shit, what the hell have Psyopus unleashed on mankind with this release here?. Anyway I received the cd and haven't checked it out directly (fatal mistake). I decided to listen to that album the first time on a nice long car ride. End of the story, I have lost my driver's license, because our great police has taken a nice picture of me while I was driving with breakneck speed. Never mind, I will contact the band and tell them that they have to pay my speeding fine, cause someone who creates such a sick music like on "Our Puzzling Encounters Considered" must be responsible for the consequences. That was my first experience with the new Psyopus album. For all the people who can't assign the band into a genre, these Yankee's are playing extreme aggressive mathcore/grind/jazz or something like that. If someone raises the question now "Why there is a review about a core band on gutturalzine and what comes next, a Billy Talent review?": no definitively not . You can also find many grind reviews on our zine and grind including as is generally known core. Besides that I don't need to justify myself, even then if I put a Korn review on our site. If people disagree with that, they could play with Immortal in the woods. This album is pure musical destruction and one of the most extreme releases of this year. I really don't know where I should begin now, because I'm so enthused about the new material. There first full length album "Ideas Of Reference" was really great, but the new output is ultimate perfection on such a fucking high technical level that I disbelief that the band had a good childhood. I think that the band members have been confined the whole childhood with some music teachers and instruments in a basement and have been freed after 15 years to form a band which is called Psyopus. I often asked myself if the band is able to play this stuff accurate live. The Bass and Guitar players are outstanding. They play the most technical and complex stuff which I've heard since a long time without playing thousands of classical guitar solos like Necrophagist are doing it for example. Also drummer Jon Cole is really brilliant and can convince in every way, not only because he can play real fast blastbeats. Also as a jazz drummer he cuts a fine figure. As we are speaking of Jazz sometimes you can hear some short jazz parts inside the songs which are good for some breathers. But the extreme aggressive and hectically songs haven't much room for you to catch breath. This stuff here is really no music for wimps and absolutely not catchy, cause the band doesn't repeat any riffs often. So if you're looking for Viking metal with catchy sing along songs, you should better buy an Ensiferum record or similar bullshit at the mall. I think many Death Metal fans will have some trouble with the vocals here, because on this record you can't find any growls or guttural pig/frognoise stuff. The vocals are typically aggressive HC screams & shouts which really fit into this kind of music. For all the jazz fans there is also a hectically over 4 minutes long instrumental jazz song which is called "Imogenes Puzzle Pt. 2" on this record. One song which I really like to mark is "Siobhan's Song" which is in contrast to the other material on this record really wonderful harmonically. An amazing great instrumental song that proves, that the band is able to create wonderful harmonies & melodies. It should be known that I'm a fan of acoustical instrumental songs, but this one here is really one of the best instrumental songs which if heard in my whole life. Morbid Angel's "Desolate Ways" is only a small fart in contrast with this song here. "Our Puzzling Encounters Considered" is definitely my favorite album of the year and I'm sure that it won't change. I have found the nearly perfect album. Yes I belief that Psyopus have written history with this album. I think, they have created one of the most important albums in the history of extreme music. I don't shy to compare that album directly with Cynic's "Focus" and Death's "Human" album in consideration of the importance of this record, even though Psyopus is a way more sick and extreme than Cynic or Death. But I said "nearly perfect". At the end of the CD you have to listen to a nice lady which speaks badly about her ex boyfriend on a mailbox .Then she repeats the word "annoying" over 15 minutes. No idea if it really was 15 minutes, but I don't had the patience to listen to it the whole time. Finally after this there is a cool avantgarde drug trip song, which had reminded me to the band Mr.Bungle. That proves again how varied the band is and that they have a sense of humor. If you're into bands like old Dillinger Escape Plan or Ion Dissonance, you must buy this record, even if both bands are playing pussy music in contrast with Psyopus. Also jazz friends could check this record out. For the rest, everyone who is open minded for extreme hectically music should buy this record now. Great sound production, great songs and great technical skills. There has to happen a lot, if this full length album won't become my favorite album of the year. Anyway Psyopus will have a rough ride with this stuff here, because not many people understand this kind of music.
