| The two-man-combo Mortician, founded back in 1989, consisting of Will Rahmer and Roger J. Beaujard got the glorious idea of releasing two of their earlier already sold-out releases on one cd again. That is "Hacked Up For Barbecue" from 1996 and "Zombie Apocalypse" which was released in 1998. Like often, this band polarizes the metal world. Some people think that this is dull, dumb-grunting music from the assembly line; the other people love it for being a total, bass-orientated apparentness. I stand somewhere between these opinions because even though every Mortician release sounds alike and the listener gets the feeling these two guys would create their songs using a random generator, there is something special about this sound, you could almost speak of a certain "Mortician feeling". Because when you are walking on a graveyard at night, this music really creates a pleasant and sinister atmosphere. The biggest minus here is the total intro-overflow. Many tracks wouldn't last even half the duration if it wasn't for the long, often pretty dreary several minutes long movie sounds out of more or less good horror films one has to listen to. If the intros are cut out of this 72 minute-album, it would just last barely 50 minutes, that's whole 23 minutes you'll spend listening to pure movie intros only. you could rather watch a complete horror flick instead. All in all, I recommend listening to one of their cd's (your choice) if you didn't done that already and if you like it, just buy every other album and listen to a pretty good drum machine, extremely down tuned guitars and a grunting voice which at least is able to articulate a couple of letters. Everyone else should rather listen to a band which is at least able to add a little diversification and some technical skills into their music. |
