| Texas Death Metal huh? If the first thing coming into your mind when hearing the word Texas is George Bush, then I have to help you with names of some psychopathic Death Metal slaughters later. Ok let's try it again, Texas Death Metal huh? Damn it, Devourment, Prophecy, Sintury, Insidious Decrepancy, Infernal Dominion and now also Grotesque Formation. Oh and what a surprise, you have three guesses who is doing the job of the singer here again. Of course it can only be Mister Shawn "I have a finger in every Texas Death Metal pie" Whitaker. But seriously there are many good reasons, why this guy is in great demand, because his vocal style is one of the sickest and most independent in the whole USA. Again Shawn settled down in a real Brutal Death Metal band (everything else would be inappropriate). The stuff on "Basement Decompositions" is blasting uncompromising straight forward into the face, without losing the specific "Texas Groove". I guess, that will satisfy blast beat maniacs and people which are into the old slam stuff from Devourment similarly. Shawn's vocals here are eminently multilaterally. He is using sick gutturals right up to screams, so that there's no room for boredom coming up. I can't mention enough how amazing his vocals are; he could really sing in any untalented Death Metal band he wants and it would be worth to buy a CD in the end. Ok let's stop that Shawn Whitaker stuff now, because in musical view this album isn't untalentet or bad also. The guitar player is doing a great job here; fast, aggressive and slaughtering suffocation styled riffs which will blow you away. This is really great, but about the drummer I've to say that he's giving the impression that he wasn't born with a metronome in his head. Well, this guy isn't that bad, but sometimes the blast beats sound like that he isn't 100% in time with the music. But at the mid-tempo and groove parts everything fits again and is sounding great. These small mistakes are not really much a big problem at all, as they didn't make this CD unenjoyable. Ok we have the vocals, the guitar and the drums and now we're talking about the bass. Yes one can hear a bass on this record and as I am also a bass player all I can say is that this bass here sounds so fucking shitty and muddy, that I want to vomit my lunch on that album. Anyhow, I can really recommend this album to all fans of TXDM. But something you'd better understand is that the sound production really sounds like underground Death Metal has to sound and that's how it should be, because Grotesque Formation are exactly that. To make it quite clear, when I'm talking about underground here, it doesn't mean that the band sucks ass. I'm talking about it in a completely positive way. Unfortunately there's one point that really sucks, and that's the damn short runtime of 28:42 Minutes. In my opinion it's not enough for a full length album. If one considers the fact that the last two songs are taken from their demo one can feel a little bit messed around. Too bad, I can't write about the band lyrics, because they're not printed in the booklet. But everyone should understand that a band with song titles like "Disposed Whore Mutilation" doesn't fight for women's rights. Ok "Basement Decompositions" is a good album, with some great songs on it, but at all the playtime is too short. For all the Shawn Whitaker maniacs out there the purchase of this album should be absolutely duty. But also all the other Brutal Death Metal fans worldwide can have some great minutes with this CD and when there is also an amazing cover artwork of Toshihiro Egawa included one can somewhat rather forget that a long runtime is not existing here. |
