There are really a few miracles on this world, because the band Element featuring the blast beat monster K.C. Howard is again another extreme technical death metal band from my current favorite death metal stronghold California. If you're speculating right now about where you have heard the name K.C. before, here's a little tip. He's also drummer for Odious Mortem and Decrepit Birth. And again we have another "celebrity" in a newcomer band. I was really astonished that the band isn't signed at Unique Leader Records, because with that sound they fit 100% into the Unique Leader concept. Ok "Aeons Past" was released on Brutal Bands, but personally that doesn't displeases me in any way, cause it only proves that good technical death metal bands haven't been signed on unique leader records to have quality (nevertheless I bet that the next element release will be released by UL). Element are playing pure technical death in a style which isn't that far away from K.C.'s other two bands. So if you're into Odious Mortem and Decrepit Birth you will most likely be enthused about this full length album. Many blast beats, technical guitar wankery and a singer, with a real powerful and diversified death metal voice. Well you can't find any extreme low gargling guttural vocals here, but it's better than having some shitty monotonous vocals in the veins of bands like Cephalotripsy. But comparing Element with this noisy crew is nearly sacrilegious. Comparisons with bands like Decrepit Birth or Odious Mortem are more logical, but Element are way more progressive and diversified, even though I can only talk about the old stuff of K.C.'s other killer bands, we will see how they sound in the future, but the new songs which I have checked out are nearly perfect. On the song "Kronor VII" you can hear a great guitar solo, which sounds very familiar to me; it reminds me of a solo on Cryptopsy's masterpiece "Whisper Supremacy". The last track of this record is a 2 minute instrumental track. I was always a fan of instrumental intros and outros and so I wasn't disappointed about that song here. It's an extreme melodic, guitar instrumental full of effects. I wish more bands would do it like this way. "Aeon's Past" is really a brilliant death metal full length album with a great sounding production. Personally it's my favorite death metal album of the year, together with the last Defeated Sanity. But we have also a small negative point here, which is that you can't notice big differences between this band and K.C.'s other bands. Anyway, this stuff here is really great.
