| So there we have some new Death Metal talents from Germany again. This time I have to deal with a young band that is spreading its deadly dose of noise onto mankind directly from the Ruhr area. Their first full length album is called "Chamber Of Depravity" and it's able to convince with a tasty and also gory cover artwork which really assembles the album title in a visual way. Even though the first impression with a band name like Disgorgement and a slaughter artwork leads into the direction of perverted brutal US Death Metal you will determine relatively fast that you should listen to it first before you pigeonhole the band. After a silent melancholic instrumental acoustic guitar intro the band is directly swinging the Death Metal cudgel whereby an intense double bass thunderstorm with bone crushing guitar tabs is unleashed. Primarily the existing material is played in a mid-tempo speed but the band does not completely abandon on blast beats. Generally I would say that Disgorgement have mostly served by US old school Death Metal bands of the early 90's and a lot of Swedish Death Metal which you can discern through the sometimes very melodic guitar parts. Don't let yourself get scared too much as we don't have to deal with another At The Gates cover band here but with a serious Death Metal band that has to offer a lot of brute elements. Especially drummer Dennis is able to take care of a constantly powerful pressure with his double bass attacks. Even though some melodic guitar leads are played, the guitar players are still presenting many mighty brutal Death Metal riffs. In my opinion everything works very well here because of the really good sound production. Such a song material like on "Chamber of Depravity" can only work with a powerful and heavy sound and these guys from Dortmund are able to possess it. When it comes to the vocals we have a little rarity here as Disgorgement is using two vocalists whereby one singer is responsible for deep Death Metal growls and the other one devotes himself to high and aggressive shouts. Unfortunately we have to concern with one big negative point here. While I think that the low Death Metal vocals are very fitting, the black metal styled screams are otherwise annoying me. As both singers are switching around the whole time the screamed vocals are unfortunately not a rarity. I think that the band tried to assemble some kind of diversion, but that sadly hasn't achieved a positive effect in my case. Well Disgorgement created a solid Death Metal album but it's nevertheless not enough right now to indeed shine out. All songs are over all presented qualitative and technically seen everything sounds alright. But what I've missed here was the individuality. Also I think that for the future they should start to use blast beats a little bit more and reconsider the case with the shouts. Ok this is a question of own taste again and I'm confident that there are enough people out there who are into this kind of vocal style. If you are into some melodic stuff of bands like Malevolent Creation, Kataklysm or Vomitory then you could grab this album without worries. Definitely Disgorgement reveals a high potential and I hope that these guys will develop in a good way. |
