| With their debut full length album "God On Acid" Despondency have been taking care for enough eddy in the German Death Metal underground back in the year 2003. The reason for this is easily comprehensible, because at this time brutal guttural US style Death Metal bands have been very rare in Germany. Hey, but don't get me wrong, I don't say that they were the first German band that decided to play brutal guttural Death Metal, but they're definitely one of the reasons that the German Brutal Death Metal scene has attract more attention and grew stronger than ever before. After three years of silence Despondency are finally back with their newest output, a four song EP which is called "Supreme Misanthropic Brutality". The lovely title fits absolutely to the music because the new stuff sounds so brutal and misanthropically that you're getting afraid. Personally I would say that compared to the previous release they have bought a little bit more "Brutality" from the USA. Especially the drum sound does not sound so synthetically and triggered anymore. Now it is really blasting you away. One bandname which always comes into my mind while I'm listening to this EP is Disgorge (USA) during the Matti Way age. One of the points that prove my view are the sick ass guttural vocals of singer Konni. If someone is looking for an official successor for Matti Way, check out Konni, because he knows his business thoroughly. The three new songs are all great Death Metal killer songs and should satisfy all fans of the band and also all brutal US DeathMetal maniacs. But one big problem on this EP and maybe on all other EP's is again the short playtime. You're listening to this EP and when you really start to enjoy it the show is already over again and you're still hungry for more. At the end of this record you can hear an amazing cover of the song "Catatonia" from the Death Metal gods Suffocation. Maybe Despondency recorded the best Suffocation cover of all time here, but why has it to be "Catatonia" again? Seriously this song rules, but the fact of the matter is that Suffocation haven't only wrote one very good song. Ok after Unmerciful and Goreinhaled Despondency is now the third band I know that has performed a "Catatonia" cover song. Maybe in future one could try to cover a song from the "Effigy Of The Forgotten" or the "Pierced From Within" album. In my opinion the three new songs are actually the best songs in the history of this band, but at all it's not enough you get for your money. That's the reason why I would recommend this EP only to the real Despondency fans who are not able to wait for new stuff any longer. All the people which are not that familiar with this band should better buy the previous full length album "God On Acid" first. |
